UBAI—Two oil tankers were damaged in suspected attacks off the coast of Iran early Thursday, sending oil prices sharply higher amid tensions between the U.S. and Iran following assaults on vessels last month.
According to government officials in Japan and ship operators, two tankers with oil bound for Asia came under a suspected attack early Thursday local time.
U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain, which oversees U.S. naval operations in the region, received two distress calls about the attacks on the tankers in the Gulf of Oman, one at ۶:۱۲ a.m. local time and another one at ۷ a.m., according to a statement from Cmdr. Josh Frey, a spokesman for the command. The USS Bainbridge, a destroyer, is rendering assistance.
Brent crude was up ۳.۵% at $۶۲.۰۵ a barrel after reports of the news.

Bermuda-based shipping company Frontline Ltd. said one of its vessels, Front Altair, was on fire in the Gulf of Oman and its crew had been safely evacuated from the ship. A spokesman said the company was investigating the incident but didn’t know how the fire had started.
The crew of the Front Altair was picked up by the Hyundai Dubai. Her master was heard on the radio by other vessels saying that the “fire came from a surface attack.”
Singapore-based Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which manages the second vessel, the Kokuka Courageous, said in a statement that the vessel was “damaged as a result of the suspected attack,” which damaged the hull above the water line. All ۲۱ crew had abandoned the vessel and were safe.

The vessel is about ۷۰ nautical miles from Fujairah, on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, and about ۱۴ nautical miles from the coast of Iran.
Japan’s transport ministry said it was investigating a possible attack on tankers in the Middle East. “We received information that two tankers which were loaded with cargo for Japan were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry convened an emergency meeting,” said Japanese industry minister Hiroshige Seko. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf of Oman to the Persian Gulf.
Iranian state media first reported the country’s vessels had helped evacuate the crew of the tankers but later clarified that ships passing nearby had come to the rescue.
Tensions remain high between the U.S. and Iran following an attack on four vessels in the region last month. Washington has accused Iran of attacking four ships in the Gulf of Oman last month, an incident that further strained relations in the region as the White House has displayed a show of military force to deter Tehran. Iran has denied involvement.
Four explosions on May ۱۲ blew holes in the hulls of two tankers from Saudi Arabia, one from Norway, and an Emirati ship near the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The area is a major transit point for oil vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the U.S. accusations, Emirati officials have stopped short of directly accusing Iran. In a closed-door briefing to members of the United Nations Security Council, the U.A.E. said earlier this month that special forces from a hostile nation likely carried out coordinated attacks.
